I believe in treating the whole person, also known as a holistic approach, and so my therapeutic practices include the body, mind, and spirit of my clients. I view each of my clients not as a “problem” or diagnosis, but rather as a person with goals who is looking to make his/her life better in some way. My clients and I often find that using expressive therapy techniques (including writing, music, and other artforms) help in treating all three aspects of the whole person. The expressive arts expand upon traditional talk therapy, using a combination of empathic listening and client self-expression to foster a client’s process of discovery and understanding. Many of my clients also find spiritual beliefs and meditation practices are helpful in gaining insight, and we frequently blend these into therapy as well.
Believing that it is imperative to find a balance of science, expression, and compassion in treatment, I also practice from an evidence-based best practices modality. This means that I highly respect and stay informed of current research that indicates the best outcome for my client and his/her family/support system, and I tailor treatment accordingly. Additionally I treat from a strengths-based perspective, focusing on client and family/support system strengths and developing ways to foster these to achieve a client’s stated goals.
At all times I strive to create a safe and supportive environment in which compassion and empathy pave a path for growth and healing.
